Sometimes Autism is a Laughing Matter

(Phoenix, Arizona)  -  Sometimes Autism is a laughing matter according to author Lisa Masters. Most books on the subject of autism are aimed at the people who help manage children with autism.  Lisa Masters took a unique approach to coping with a puzzling and often heartbreaking diagnosis, writing about her two young sons, illustrating the humor that can arise from the worst situations.

Lisa is a single mother of two boys with autism.  She graduated with a major in Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany, and lives in Phoenix.  She explained the purpose of her book as follows: “…I think it is important to show a side of autism that is hardly, if ever, portrayed; and… to maintain public awareness by teaching people how children with autism think.  First and foremost, I want to say that there is nothing funny about autism.  It is a devastating diagnosis that affects entire families and communities. But since there is no known cause or cure, for now autism is here to stay. Public perception is that it is all bad and I am here to say it is not. Laughter can be a great coping mechanism to get through the day to day struggles. Many of us feel that we are on the outskirts of society looking in and these humorous moments give rise to some common ground in a neuro-typical world, it helps lessen the gap for parents and provides a sense of normalcy and joy. Not a day goes by that my children don't make me smile or even laugh out loud. I want others to know its ok to laugh.”

The Funny Side of Autism is a book about the funny things children with autism do and say. It is a compilation of short stories related to Lisa’s own experiences raising two boys with autism, and stories generously shared by people from around the country who have been in some way affected by autism. There are an abundant amount of books out there having to do with autism, whether they are informational resources, "how to" guides, or someone's story. The Funny Side of Autism is the first book of its kind to focus on the positive side of an otherwise dark diagnosis. The Funny Side of Autism may be purchased for $14.95 at any Barnes & Noble Bookstore, BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon.com or Inkellproductions.com.
