Eye contact is so overrated

I’m Lisa and the single mom of 2 wonderful boys with Autism ages 7 and 10. I was going to write a book that would have been titled Autism Sucks. But as I was writing I realized, “My god this is depressing all over again!”

Why would I want to relive all the heartache I have experienced this past decade? (I don’t) and who would care about my story anyway- it’s no longer unique, sad to say.

So I decided to change gears, and I started to write down all the funny moments. As hard and as exhausting as it is, there are moments that catch you off guard- funny moments that show how sweet and innocent children with Autism are and how they too are so desperately trying to comprehend our world as we try to comprehend theirs.

I can only equate it to a comedy of errors at times.

For example:

My oldest son went through a phase of being obsessed with pregnancy. The day started and ended with questions, books, videos, putting pillows under our shirts- the works. This kid had such a grasp on how the mommy makes the baby in her belly.

Or so I thought…

Shopping in Wal-mart one day

I was checking out at the register when Brandon sees a heavy set man sitting on a bench at the end of the checkout line. Before I could stop him he runs over to the man, grabs the guys belly and asks the guy,

“Excuse me sir, do you got a baby in there?”

So you see there are times when all you can do is laugh. It’s the proverbial, turning lemons into lemonade. And boy do I have a lot of lemonade!
